I shall not be at another regular season game at Third and Long as I am flying home to London for the holidays. So barring a Christmas miracle of a Miami post season chances are I won’t get to catch up with many of you until the draft. So here’s to hoping.

Unlike many other sports leagues in the U.S., the NFL is a short season; it’s a brutal and punishing game that all too quickly takes its toll on those who play it. A loss at any time is big, and in the NFL it doesn’t take long for there to be one too many.
I needed a little time to gather my thoughts following Sunday’s debacle.
I have been guilty of hubris, and that arrogance made me look foolish this Sunday, as much or more so than our own beloved Dolphins. When the final whistle mercifully blew on Sunday, many fans were angry, shocked, lost for words, distraught… I could go on and on. During the game I felt many of these feelings, but as I walked home from 3rd and Long, I put it in my rear view mirror and reflected. Truth is, at the start of the regular season, had someone said that nine games in we would be 4-5, I would have been happy; I would have taken it.
I just wanted to make sure you guys saw this Sun Sentinel article from last week talking about “roving Miami Dolphins fans” who go to away games. The article talks about Dolfans NYC and they interviewed me and used a bunch of my photos for the article. It was pretty cool. One of the photos was on the front page of the business section last week. I meant to blog about it then but I ran out of time and then we lost the Eagles game and I was caught up in the whole Tony getting fired thing and I forgot about it.
It is after 6am right now and I am just going to bed getting ready to wake up in 5 hours and head down to Third and Long to watch the Dolphins sweep the Bills for the first time in a while and climb out of the cellar in the AFC East. I hope to see you all out there. We only have a few games left and I know a lot of people won’t be around for the Christmas eve game. Anyway, we have an event planned for the Jets game on New Years Day that I will let you know about soon but until then, let’s get crazy tomorrow. Go Dolphins!
Although it seems ages ago after that tragedy that befell us on Thanksgiving Day, last Sunday was fantastic. Our boys in Aqua trounced the Buffalo Jills in the most brutal fashion. Our defense came up huge pounding away on the Bills who limped off the field down by multiple scores after just the first half. It was a beautiful thing.
Third and Long was not exactly packed as you might expect when your team loses seven straight games to open a season but the die hards are there every week and by the end of the first quarter the bar was bumping. This was the most fun I have had watching a Dolphins game since I had second row seats to watch the Phins beat the Jets at the Meadowlands to lock up the AFC Championship in 2008. It was a great day.
I took a few pictures that are not exactly the most flattering shots of our bunch. Earlier in the year we tend to have a lot more cute girls out. But hey a win is a win and shots all around. Go Dolphins!
So yeah, the Dolphins season ended officially last week. It was a blower and it sucked losing to an AFC East rival and a team that is well… not very good. This season has been very trying for Dolphins fans everywhere but I think we at Dolfans NYC have had it a bit easier than most. We have each other.
As much as the game sucked last week I think we as a group had a lot of fun. Buffalo Trace Bourbon threw us a party with a “Shoot the Buffalo” theme. They had 300 wings on hand and a lot of free and cheap Bourbon for everyone. We raffled off a Anthony Fasano & Joey Haynos autographed football and a Larry Csonka autographed football. Along with donations for the food we raised $200 for the I Will Foundation and had some money left over to add to our Dolfans NYC war chest for the off season.
Now this weekend coming up we have the Detroit Lions. This is our chance to get at least one more win at home and make all the Dolfans NYC fans back in Miami for Christmas happy. This is a try out for all the players on this team that are on the borderline of returning next year. Henne is going to continue to start the next two games so this will be a big test for him to see if he can show at least something that will make us think he is worth keeping around. These games are important even if they won’t help us play past January 2nd.
We are out of the playoffs playing an NFC team, who is terrible, the day after Christmas. I have a feeling Third & Long is not exactly going to be packed. I know Michelle, Alex and I are all going to be out of town. Still I know there will be some people in town for the holidays who have never been to Third & Long looking for some people to watch the game with so I hope a lot of you come out. I know the die hards will be there and hopefully there will be a decent crowd anyway. I’ll be back for the Patriots game to end the season and I don’t want to hear from Curtis that the bar was dead!
Hey guys! Amazing win against the Jets last week!
This week we play another division rival, the stinking Buffalo Bills. As bad as their record is they are actually playing pretty good offensive football and our line took a big loss this week losing Vernon Carey for the year. This game could be a tough one…
We are doing a special event for the game at Third & Long thanks to Buffalo Trace Bourbon. They are doing a campaign called “Shoot the Buffalo” and the woman who handles their marketing is a HUGE Dolphins fan and thought we could work something out. She provided five bottles of Buffalo Trace to our tailgate last week and this week for the Buffalo game she is buying us 300 Buffalo Wings and doing Buffalo Trace specials at the bar. It’s just $4 a shot and $6 for mixed drinks. I didn’t drink any last weekend but from what everyone told me it’s really, really good bourbon.
On top of the cheap Bourbon and free wings Nat Moore sent us a Larry Csonka autographed football to auction off during the game. We will be auctioning off that as well as some other Dolphins memorabilia during the third quarter of the game. Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1. As always all the sales from the fundraising go to charity and to raising money for the club so we can do things like tailgates and print more t-shirts.
Over the last few weeks we have made a lot of really good connections with the Dolphins organization and we have some really amazing stuff to look forward to next season. I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves but we should have some pretty awesome events and raffle prizes next year. Plus with the Dolphins coming to town next year to play the Giants we will have TWO Meadowlands tailgates.
Lastly, I leave you with another sick Solo D song: “Beat The Bills”! Go Dolphins!
Thanks to everyone who came out last week. The place was packed! It was almost too packed and unfortunately there was a line to get in during the first quarter. Luckily everyone who waited got in after a few minutes. Third and Long has told us they were going to make sure they are going to stream line everything and make sure our people are well taken care of. It’s pretty clear the bar was happy with how many people came out.
The game was amazing too. I know the Dolphins offense was sloppy but the defense looked amazing and there were lots of moments for the crowd to go nuts… which we did. I love Third and Long so much. Curtis the manager is amazing and the bartenders are super cool. Even the non Phins fans are great. The “Brew Crew” are the regulars who sit at the bar and bet on EVERYTHING including the color of the bartender’s underwear. There is plenty of NFL betting going on too though if you want to get in on that action. Anyway… the place is home and we love it.
Being recognized by the Dolphins as the official fan club of NYC Phins fans is that we work with the team as much as possible. They hook us up with stuff and soon they are going to send us some autographed stuff to raffle off. We are trying to raise $1000 for the Miami Dolphin Foundation this year and we have made a pretty good start so far raising $300 with ad revenue on the site and selling our DolfansNYC t-shirts. Some of that money is going to go to some of the costs associated with running this club but every other penny is going to charity. The Phins also wanted us to tell you guys about the team photo store. Michelle will talk about it more in another post this week, but for now just check it out. It’s a pretty cool thing and you can get a free picture.
Now, the important news from this update. We got pictures! I try to take pictures every week and I took a bunch from week one. Check out the slideshow below. And just click on it if you want to download any of the pictures.
Guess what? It’s football season and on Sunday DolfansNYC is having their first meet up of the year! We will be going crazy at 3rd & Long. The bar opens at noon and I would say get there early if you want a seat…
If you have not been to 3rd and Long before here is some info. The bar is located on the Southeast corner of 35th and 3rd in Murray Hill. The closest stop is the 6 Train at 33rd and Lexington. There will be drink specials if you wear Dolphins gear and while the bar does not serve food, you are encouraged to bring you own. There are a lot of good places to eat right around the bar and Third and Long as binder full of delivery options. It’s always funny to see a delivery guy deliver to a bar.
This year we have been asked by the Miami Dolphins to raise money for the Miami Dolphin Foundation charity. Our personal goal is $1000 but I would like to see us raise $1500. We have already raised $100 by selling an ad on the DolfansNYC website, so we only have $900 more to go to reach our goal.
We will be doing raffles like we did last year at a number of the games. We aren’t doing on this week but we will be selling DolfansNYC t-shirts for $15 with half of the money going to charity and half of the money going to DolfansNYC so we can do things like pay for the shirts, promote the club and buy stuff for the raffles. If you have any ideas for fundraising let us know.
Lastly Michelle recently got a job working for Showtime Sports. This is a bit of a good news/ bad news thing for us at DolfansNYC. Obviously the good news is that Michelle got pretty much her dream job. The bad news is that she might not be able to be at all of our events and help out as much as last year. But the other good news is that this week she is going to be filming 3rd & Long for a Showtime Sports feature on NFL Fans in NYC. So come out this Sunday and we will make you famous!
Not sure if I have any other news for you guys, but this should be an exciting year. I think the bar will be packed with Dolphins fans. I will just show you guys one other thing. If you haven’t been to 3rd and Long for a DolfansNYC event, here is a YouTube video we filmed last year that gives you a little bit of look into what DolfansNYC is all about.
We finally have a chance to have a winning record this week. We dug out of a deep hole and find ourselves in a great spot. If we can beat the Bills this week and the Patriots lose to the Saints, next week sets up to be a battle for first place in the division. But before we can get ahead of ourselves we need to take care of these Bills. They are falling apart but they played a lot better last week under a new coach. They held Mo-Jo Drew to under 100 yards and TO had nearly a 200 yard game for them with Ryan Fitzpatrick replacing Trent Edwards. We can’t take this team lightly. Should be a fun one.
Now, I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving wherever you may have had it, but I hope you will be back in time. I am in DC myself right now, but I will be taking a train first thing in the morning to get to Third & Long in time for the game. I hope to see as many people out as we had last week, that was a fantastic experience. And to keep things interesting, check out this video of Dolphin great Kim Bokamper giving DolfansNYC a shout out from his restaurant in South Florida. If you are in town for a game, you have to stop by Bokampers.
Finally we have something to smile about! It’s so much easier taking photos when we are kicking the snot out of another team… Especially the hated Bills. Even though the Patriots are probably the most hated team in the history of football, and the Jets have given us nightmares over the last decade, I still hate the Bills most of all. Growing up watching Jim Kelly keep Dan out of Super Bowl after Super Bowl I just get enraged whenever I see blue and red.
